Accreditation and Reimbursement

A reader asks, via email:
Is Somnus Sleep Clinic accredited by JCAHO and AASM? How do these processes work? Must one occur before the other? Is accreditation required for reimbursment?

Somnus Sleep Clinic is accredited by The American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM). In Mississippi and many other states, AASM accreditation is necessary for a sleep center/lab to receive reimbursement for a sleep study from Blue Cross/Blue Shield plans. In some states, other insurance companies also have this restriction.

I don't know too much about JCAHO accreditation of sleep labs/centers. I believe that in some states (not MS), some insurance companies will reimburse for sleep studies at labs/centers accredited by either the AASM or JCAHO. I believe that JCAHO accreditation is mainly for hospital-based sleep labs/centers.

If any reader has more info about JCAHO accreditation for sleep labs/centers, please leave a comment

I have just come across this blog and thank you for it's existance. I just completed a feasability study in MO to find it is a wide open market, underserved community and the local hospitals have no capital to expand badly needed services. I feel into the topic and the more I research the more concerned I am about lack of services. The closer I look the more I think an emphasis on bariatric care is where I would like to start. 1 size fits All equipment vs. 1 size fits most. Any discussion in this area will be most welcome.

Hello Dr. Rack!

My name is Sarah and I’m a health activist for WEGO Health. Recently we’ve done some research on sleeping and I found your blog through a Google search. I was particularly impressed by your highly active involvement in the online sleep community. It is because of this that I’d like to feature you and your blog on the WEGO Health pages as a spotlight interview.

Would you be willing to answer some questions about your personal experiences with sleeping disturbances/disorders?

WEGO Health’s mission is to help people find the best health information. To that end, we identify, rank and organize the best health content and make it easily accessible to everyone. Our mission is articulated well here: http://www.wegohealth.com/about-us.html

Thank you for your time. I hope to hear from you soon!

karry, thank you for your comments. I took a closer look at your comment this weekend. What type of equipment are you talking about (1 size fits All equipment vs 1 size fits most)?
In the field of sleep medicine, it is wise to design equipment (beds and toilets and showers in the sleep lab)to be able to accomodate at least 500 lbs, and preferably 600.

DME providers can also be JCAHO accredited. I work for a DME that provides sttictly sleep apnea equipment. We have currently over 17,000 patients on our program, and we are JCAHO accredited.
