Sleep Center Accreditation

Sleep Review magazine's November issue is now available online.
It has an article about accreditation; I agree with every word of it:

i have lost almost all respect for the aasm, in particular their accreditation process, which appears to be nothing more than a way to collect $$.

last week, another unworthy doctor's office was accredited as a sleep center. one where, the marketing staff approaches doctors who have relatively no knowledge of sleep with a way to make money by interpreting sleep studies. this is not reimbursement, as everyone is paid a prenegotiated amount, where they just add a signature and return by fax. i would think a surveyor should be able to pick up on something such as this. this is even done with their medicare patients. i am curious what cms would think, considering the new requirements to be an accreditated site.

it does no good to approach the aasm, as i have seen first hand in the recent past where a physician has pleaded with them to review the status of an accredited lab, to which the response was simply, we do not come out and survey again, it will have to wait until the current accreditation expires.

facilities so blatently cheaping the practice of sleep medicine by paying doctors to interpret studies that boarded physicians worked very hard to do and the aasm closes their eyes to it. it makes no sense, unless the money is truely the focus not patient care.

Jason, thanks for your comments. I agree with your criticisms of the AASM's accreditation process. I disagree that the AASM is primarily motivated by $. The AASM has good intentions. I know many members of the AASM staff and a few of the Board of Directors. I have many disagreements with the AASM, but do not doubt that those who are running the AASM are doing their best to advance the field of sleep medicine. I will try to address your criticisms of the accreditation process in a later post.

thanks for reading sleepdoctor!
